Shooting of Air Cannon

The City of Abbeville to Utilize Air Cannon to Deter Federally Protected Birds from Roosting

The City will utilize a propane powered air cannon that will be strategically placed near the McGowan Street area from September 5, 2017 through September 15, 2017, not to include weekends.  The air cannon will be fired into the air with 3 to 4 shots fired within a period of ten minutes between 8:30 and 9:30 each morning and again between dusk and sunset in the evening. The blasts of the cannon will startle nuisance birds causing them to fly away.

Vultures are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 and are necessary scavengers that remove carrion from the environment but can damage buildings by tearing at roof materials as well as attack and kill small animals.  Vulteres congregate in large numbers by roosting in trees and on tall structures such as water and electrical towers with their home range extending to and beyond a nine mile radius.
